Building owners and managers carry both a legal and a moral obligation to provide and maintain a working environment that is safe and free of risks to health, so far as is reasonably practicable. Under Work Health and Safety (or Occupational Health and Safety) legislation in each Australian state and territory, those conducting a business or undertaking have a specific duty of care to prepare, maintain, and implement an Emergency Management Plan.

Emergency Management Plan
An Emergency Management Plan (EMP) is a comprehensive document that sets out the strategies, procedures, and responsibilities for responding to and recovering from emergencies within an organisation or site. A good EMP covers a wide range of scenarios, including fire, gas leaks and power outages, natural events, chemical spills, and personal threat situations. While the exact requirements vary slightly between jurisdictions, most EMPs align closely with Australian Standard AS3745-2010: Planning for Emergencies in Facilities, which provides the framework Stokes Safety uses when developing and implementing plans for our clients.
Emergency Response Awareness Training
An Emergency Management Plan is only as effective as the people who need to act on it. Emergency response awareness training equips the nominated Emergency Planning Committee (EPC) and Emergency Control Organisation, often known as the Warden team, with the knowledge to plan for emergencies and respond appropriately across a range of different scenarios, based on the site's specific Emergency Management Plan. Training brings real benefits: regulatory compliance, protection of lives and property, minimised business disruption, stronger employee morale, and a visible demonstration of corporate responsibility.
Evacuation Exercise (Fire Drill)
We recommend a full site evacuation exercise at least annually to keep staff aware and prepared. Stokes Safety can guide a site through this process as part of, or immediately following, Emergency Response Awareness Training. Regular, well-run evacuation drills make a genuine emergency evacuation smoother and significantly reduce the chance of confusion escalating into panic.
