Occupational health and safety legislation differs slightly from state to state, but the underlying obligation is consistent across Australia: employers must provide and maintain a working environment that is safe and free of risks to health, so far as is reasonably practicable. Legislation across Australia
Each state and territory operates under its own Act and Regulations. The ACT, NSW, NT, and QLD operate under Work Health and Safety Acts and Regulations broadly aligned with the national model laws. Victoria continues to operate under the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004 and Regulations 2017. Tasmania operates under the Workplace Health and Safety Act 2012 and Regulations 2022. WA operates under the Occupational Safety and Health Act 2020 and Regulations 2022, and SA under the Occupational Health, Safety and Welfare Act and Regulations 2012. Understanding which framework applies to your site is the starting point for any OHS training or risk assessment we carry out.

OHS Risk Assessment (OHSRA)
An OHS Risk Assessment involves a thorough audit of a site using a well-established format to evaluate its OHS, contractor management, and emergency management systems. This includes checking basic Essential Safety Measure (ESM) compliance for fire equipment, the condition of plant equipment rooms, and basic chemical storage requirements, giving a broad picture of a site's day-to-day safety position.

Fire Risk Assessment (FRA)
A Fire Risk Assessment focuses specifically on the condition of the building and the nature of the activities carried out within it. This includes identifying sources of fuel, ignition, and oxygen, along with an assessment of the building's structural elements, work practices, and environmental considerations that could contribute to fire risk.

Property Risk Assessment (PRA)
Building on both an OHSRA and an FRA, a Property Risk Assessment is a methodical evaluation of the potential threats and hazards that could affect a property's value, safety, or functionality. This broader assessment is particularly useful for property owners, managers, and insurers who need to understand the risks involved in a property and put proactive measures in place to mitigate them.
